    Reliability Estimation of Reciprocating Seals Based on Multivariate Dependence Analysis and It\u27s Experimental Validation

    Accurate reliability estimation for reciprocating seals is of great significance due to their wide use in numerous engineering applications. This work proposes a reliability estimation method for reciprocating seals based on multivariate dependence analysis of different performance indicators. Degradation behavior corresponding to each performance indicator is first described by the Wiener process. Dependence among different performance indicators is then captured using D-vine copula, and a weight-based copula selection method is utilized to determine the optimal bivariate copula for each dependence relationship. A two-stage Bayesian method is used to estimate the parameters in the proposed model. Finally, a reciprocating seal degradation test is conducted, and the proposed reliability estimation approach is validated by test data. Results show that the proposed model is accurate and effective in estimating the reliability of reciprocating seals

    Reliability Estimation of Rotary Lip Seal in Aircraft Utility System Based on Time-Varying Dependence Degradation Model and Its Experimental Validation

    With several attractive properties, rotary lip seals are widely used in aircraft utility system, and their reliability estimation has drawn more and more attention. This work proposes a reliability estimation approach based on time-varying dependence analysis. The dependence between the two performance indicators of rotary lip seals, namely leakage rate and friction torque, is modeled by time-varying copula function with polynomial to denote the time-varying parameters, and an efficient copula selection approach is utilized to select the optimal copula function. Parameter estimation is carried out based on a Bayesian method and the reliability during the whole lifetime is calculated based on a Monte Carlo method. Degradation test for rotary lip seal is conducted and the proposed model is validated by test data. The optimal copula function and optimal order of polynomial are determined based on test data. Results show that this model is effective in estimating the reliability of rotary lip seals and can achieve a better goodness of fit

    Performance Degradation Based on Importance Change and Application in Dissimilar Redundancy Actuation System

    The importance measure is a crucial method to identify and evaluate the system weak link. It is widely used in the optimization design and maintenance decision of aviation, aerospace, nuclear energy and other systems. The dissimilar redundancy actuation system (DRAS) is a key aircraft control subsystem which performs aircraft attitude and flight trajectory control. Its performance and reliability directly affect the aircraft flight quality and flight safety. This paper considers the influence of the Birnbaum importance measure (BIM) and integrated importance measure (IIM) on the reliability changes of key components in DRAS. The differences of physical fault characteristics of different components due to performance degradation and power mismatch, are first considered. The reliability of each component in the system is then estimated by assuming that the stochastic degradation process of the DRAS components follows an inverse Gaussian (IG) process. Finally, the weak links of the system are identified using BIM and IIM, so that the resources can be reasonably allocated to the weak links during the maintenance period. The proposed method can provide a technical support for personnel maintenance, in order to improve the system reliability with a minimal lifecycle cost

    Opportunistic Maintenance Strategy of a Heave Compensation System for Expected Performance Degradation

    In the marine industry, heave compensation systems are applied to marine equipment to compensate for the adverse effects of waves and the hydraulic system is usually used as the power system of heave compensation systems. This article introduces importance theory to the opportunistic maintenance (OM) strategy to provide guidance for the maintenance of heave compensation systems. The working principle of a semi-active heave compensation system and the specific working states of its hydraulic components are also first explained. Opportunistic maintenance is applied to the semi-active heave compensation system. Moreover, the joint integrated importance measure (JIIM) between different components at different moments is analyzed and used as the basis for the selection of components on which to perform PM, with the ultimate goal of delaying the degradation of the expected performance of the system. Finally, compared with conditional marginal reliability importance (CMRI)-based OM, the effectiveness of JIIM-based OM is verified by the Monte Carlo method

A simulation study and a real application in the reliability estimation of mechanical seal used in airborne hydraulic pump are conducted to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model compared with existing reliability models

    Reliability-Oriented Configuration Optimization of More Electrical Control Systems

    More electrical vehicles adopt dissimilar redundant control systems with dissimilar power supplies and dissimilar actuators to achieve high reliability and safety, but this introduces more intricacy into the configuration design. Currently, it is difficult to identify the optimum configuration via the conventional trial-and-error approach within an acceptable timeframe. Hence, it is imperative to discover novel methods for the configuration design of more electrical vehicles. This paper introduced the design specification of more electric vehicles and investigated the contribution of different kinds of actuators, presenting a new multi-objective configuration optimization approach on the foundation of system reliability, weight, power, and cost. By adopting the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II), the Pareto optimization design set was obtained. Then, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was introduced to make a comprehensive decision on the schemes in the Pareto set and determine the optimal system configuration. Eventually, numerical results indicated that the reliability of our designed configuration increased by 5.89% and 55.34%, respectively, compared with dual redundancies and single redundancy configurations, which verified the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method

    Support Vector Regression Based Indoor Location in IEEE 802.11 Environments

    The wide spread of the 802.11-based wireless technology brings about a good opportunity for the indoor positioning system. In this paper, we present a new 802.11-based indoor positioning method using support vector regression (SVR), which consists of offline training stage and online location stage. The model that describes the relations between the position and the received signal strength (RSS) of the mobile device is established at the offline training stage by SVR, and at the online location stage the exact position is determined by this model. Due to the complex indoor environment, RSS is vulnerable and changeable. To address this issue, data filtering rules obtained through statistical analysis are applied at offline training stage to improve the quality of training samples and thus improve the quality of prediction model. At the online location stage, k-times continuous measurement is utilized to obtain the high quality RSS input, which guarantees the consistency with the training samples and improves the position accuracy of mobile devices. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed method has a higher positioning accuracy compared with the probability and neutral network method, and the demand for the storage capacity and computing power is also low at the same time

    Synthesis of PNIPAAm-g-P4VP Microgel as Draw Agent in Forward Osmosis by RAFT Polymerization and Reverse Suspension Polymerization to Improve Water Flux

    Microgels have unique and versatile properties allowing their use in forward osmosis areas as a draw agent. In this contribution, poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) was synthesized via RAFT polymerization and then grafted to a poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) crosslinking network by reverse suspension polymerization. P4VP was successfully obtained by the quasiliving polymerization with the result of nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography characterization. The particle size and particle size distribution of the PNIPAAm-g-P4VP microgels containing 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt% P4VP were measured by means of a laser particle size analyzer. It was found that all the microgels were of micrometer scale and the particle size was increased with the P4VP load. Inter/intra-molecular-specific interactions, i.e., hydrogen bond interactions were then investigated by Fourier infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the water flux measurements showed that all the PNIPAAm-g-P4VP microgels can draw water more effectively than a blank PNIPAAm microgel. For the copolymer microgel incorporating 20 wt% P4VP, the water flux was measured to be 7.48 L∙m−2∙h−1
